Requirements

  • Ph.D in Structural Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a scientific field of study and four (4) years of related experience; or Master’s degree in a scientific field of study and ten (10) years of related experience; or Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field of study and twelve (12) years of related experience.
  • Strong programming expertise exemplified by successful deployment of software or plugins for automating electron microscopy (e.g., SmartEPU, SerialEM, Leginon, Latitude, SmartScope, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of software and algorithms for processing cryoEM images for 3D reconstruction.
  • Demonstrated practical experience maintaining electron microscope hardware.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and foster strong relationships with all stakeholders including instrument vendor service and product development teams and internal scientific, IT, informatics, and lab operations teams.
  • Adaptability to juggle multiple responsibilities with changing priorities, dynamically pivoting focus based on timelines, resources, and real-time outcomes for maximal impact.

Responsibilities

  • Building upon existing solutions, as well as implementing novel approaches, to achieve more fully autonomous control over advanced electron microscopes.
  • Integrating microscope image acquisition with lab informatics, data management, and computational pipelines.
  • Optimizing microscope performance by tracking outcomes and developing tools that enable proactive and real-time response.
  • Overseeing microscope maintenance activities and service support through close coordination with external vendors, internal lab operations, and our team of scientist-microscopists.
  • Refining operating procedures, communicating best practices, and sharing expertise by providing individualized training to team members.
  • Collaborating closely with team members to ensure that accelerated acquisition through automation is optimized for efficient delivery of high-quality protein structures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practical understanding of protein structure and biochemistry including methods to address commonly encountered limitations in specimen preparation (e.g. preferred orientation, aggregation, unfolding).
  • Experience augmenting scientist-machine interactions through AI and emerging digital tools.
  • Familiarity with standard packages and recently published software tools for protein modeling and structure validation.
  • Experience developing software collaboratively within a team environment.
