Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or APRN (FNP) with stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
  • Must have at least 6 months of hospital medicine experience.
  • Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or a Family Nurse Practitioner with the SC Board of Nursing.
  • Requires certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). If BLS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
  • Requires certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). If ACLS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
  • Requires certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). If PALS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to patients through taking comprehensive history and performing physical examinations.
  • Manages acute and chronic medical illnesses in medical/surgical and psychiatric patients.
  • Collaborates with psychiatrists to develop and implement treatment plans that address medical and psychiatric needs.
  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guidelines.
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician.
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members.
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or APRN (AGACNP/ACNP) with experience in adult patients (13 years to death), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent.
  • Minimum of 1 year as a Physician Assistant or FNP/AGACNP in Hospital medicine and Psychiatric care or ICU experience.
