Your role at Clorox:
As an Associate Scientist I within the Advanced Measurement Sciences (AMS) department, you will be a part of a dynamic and collaborative team with an important role in the development of every product created by Clorox R&D. The Microbiology Group, within AMS, serves an essential role, providing technical guidance and microbiological expertise to all Clorox Strategic Business Units (SBUs), including Retail Cleaning, Clorox Professional, Foods, Litter, Charcoal, Glad, Burt’s Bees, and International. The Microbiology Group works closely with multiple R&D groups including Product Development, Process, Package and other teams across all stages of the development, from concept to commercialization.
The Associate Scientist I, Cleaning position is a core role, necessary for the Cleaning Business strategy to grow and lead with #1 brands in the cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection categories, with specific emphasis on the development of new and emerging technical capabilities. This role supports the ongoing routine testing, and new method development of internal R&D projects. This includes screening methods, and the development of new methods to support various initiatives across all of Clorox’s businesses. This role is responsible for the execution, and data collection of laboratory testing in conjunction with the support of other Associate Scientists and Scientists with oversight of the R&D Manager. The successful individual will also be responsible for implementing tools, resources and practices which serve to increase microbiological capacity while working safely alongside other team members, and for regular maintenance of the laboratory.
In this role, you will:
- Execute Microbiological testing for Cleaning projects; record and share experimental data with Microbiology Scientists to drive key project decisions; and communicate effectively with appropriate team members and management when issues or hurdles arise.
- Develop and provide technical expertise on Microbiological test methods with excellence, technical rigor, and attention to detail.
- Establish and grow relationships with internal maintenance teams and external material and technology partners (i.e. consumables and equipment suppliers).
- Ensure the main laboratory space and appropriate isolations labs are clean, well-stocked and associated equipment is well-maintained, in accordance with regular preventative maintenance schedules.
- Stay abreast of relevant safety procedures while working including proper use of PPE, recommended ergonomic practices, and proper handling and storage or materials. Complete required safety training according to both site and laboratory guidelines (e.g. chemical disposal, BSL-2 training).
- Demonstrate a mentality of continuous improvement and willingness to challenge current ways of working to drive efficiency in our work and presenting means of improving the work of the broader Microbiology team.
- Establish and maintain strong technical acumen through diligent documentation practices and appropriate knowledge management.
- Grow awareness of regulatory guidance and industry practices, applying them to current initiatives and future capability development.
What we look for:
Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry.
1+ years experience working in a wet-lab environment; preferred background with microbiology experience connected to new product development, in a CPG environment.
Familiarity executing molecular biology experiments, and/or working in a BSL-2 environment with aseptic techniques.
Familiarity and/or experience with experimental design, and data analysis tools, statistics and basic programing (e.g. JMP, Minitab, advanced Excel capabilities, R and Python statistical software). Data entry, interpretation, graphing, and presenting results effectively through technical reports.
Strong project management capabilities, including independent coordination, planning and execution of activities with moderate oversight.
A high internal motivation and proactive approach in completing project work, championing continuous improvement, sustainability and consistent use of best practices.
Possess critical thinking skills, effective problem solving and understanding of technical rigor in scientific work.
Cooperative and able to work with and through others; collaborative with team members and across departments/functions. Strong team player, with a collective mindset to enable the Microbiology Group to work together to win!
