Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in intellectual property law, preferably with a mix of law firm and in-house experience.
- Strong background in software and technology-related IP matters, including patents, trade secrets, open source, and copyright.
- Experience managing global IP portfolios and working with patent and trademark offices worldwide.
- Proven ability to advise technical and business teams on complex IP issues in a practical and solutions-oriented manner.
- J.D. from a U.S. law school and membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Ability to balance legal risk with business goals in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and enhance Veeva’s global patent program, including drafting patents, overseeing filings and prosecutions, and running enforcement efforts.
- Develop and execute on Veeva’s intellectual property strategy in other IP categories, including trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, open source, and use of AI.
- Partner with product teams to identify and protect key innovations while balancing business objectives.
- Advise on open-source software use, licensing, and compliance strategies.
- Counsel business teams on intellectual property risks related to new products, partnerships, and acquisitions, including AI tools and AI-enabled products.
- Oversee IP litigation and enforcement actions, coordinating with and managing outside counsel as needed.
- Support contract negotiations by reviewing and advising on IP-related provisions in customer, vendor, and partner agreements.
- Monitor changes in intellectual property law and implement best practices to ensure compliance and protection of Veeva’s assets.
- Provide training and guidance to internal teams on IP-related topics, including trade secret protection, open source, and patent strategy.
- Manage and supervise a small team of seasoned IP specialist (e.g., patent agents).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the life sciences or SaaS industries.
- Knowledge of data privacy and regulatory issues related to intellectual property.
- Experience with AI and machine learning-related intellectual property matters.
