Responsibilities
- Assists the physician with adult and pediatric cardiac catheterizations including but not limited to the following procedures and techniques: transluminal coronary angioplasty and stenting, rotational atherectomy, temporary pacemaker insertion, pericardiocentesis, myocardial biopsy, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, mechanical circulatory support (i.e. ECMO, Impella, Protek Duo), percutaneous valvuloplasty, percutaneous valve implantation/repair, peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures.
- Practice of sterile technique preparing for procedure including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping and setup of instrument table.
- Ensures correct order is obtained, patient is properly identified and prepared for exam, and that clinical history is corroborated and appropriately documented while respecting confidentiality.
- Utilizes appropriate imaging protocol and optimizes technical factors while maximizing patient safety, optimizing patient care, and applying principles of ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable).
- Preparing and/or administering, as applicable, medications through new or existing vascular access site as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
- Evaluates images for proper positioning and acceptable technical quality and verifies archival storage and/or transfer of data, post processing of data if applicable.
- Educating and monitoring students and other health care providers.
- Assisting licensed practitioner with fluoroscopic and specialized interventional cardiology procedures.
- Records, monitors, and assesses hemodynamic data collected during procedures.
- Maintaining intra-arterial access as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
- Panning the procedure table during image production.
- Performing manual hemostasis during and after procedure.
- Operates and ensures the quality control of hemodynamic recording devices, cardiac stimulator, oxygen consumption equipment, and blood analysis equipment.
- Maintaining and removing peripherally inserted central catheters as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
- Initiates ACLS protocols as required for cardiac roles.
- Participates, as necessary, with ongoing clinical research trials pertinent to the electrophysiology laboratory.
