Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required
- Graduated from an accredited surgical technologist program
- Certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
- Good manual dexterity required
Responsibilities
- Observe aseptic technique while preparing and assisting with surgical procedures
- Display a thorough understanding of equipment, supplies, and procedures
- Make adequate provisions for meeting the needs of patients of all ages
- Anticipate physician needs and meet them with the assistance of the Circulating Nurse
- Provide and maintain a safe physical environment
- Appraise cleanliness of room and equipment prior to preparation of case
- Check operational efficiency of all necessary equipment prior to use
- Verify appropriate sterilization of supplies, equipment, and implants
- Adhere to policies regarding electrical and fire safety
- Apply principles of electrosurgical safety
- Monitor aseptic technique constantly, taking corrective action as necessary
- Handle instruments with care, replacing any instrument in need of repair
- Maintain assigned room in a constant state of readiness
- Perform all duties of the scrub nurse under the direction of a Registered Nurse
- Establish priorities by organizing daily cases and being prepared for procedures
- Count all instruments, sponges, sharps, and needles with circulating nurse as appropriate
- Assist in the preparation of the patient for surgery
- Assist physician in the performance of procedure
- Follow policies and procedures relating to proper handling of specimens and cultures
- Assist in activities at completion of procedure
- Handle unusual incidents appropriately
- Exhibit flexibility, motivation, and initiative in performance of duties
- Demonstrate ability to function effectively in trauma/emergency situations
- Demonstrate good cost containment practices
- Report to work as scheduled and conform to working hours
- Demonstrate good communication skills
- Possess knowledge and skills to care for patients of all ages
- Assume responsibility for ensuring continued personal and professional growth
- Perform other related duties as assigned
