About the area:
- The Global Institutional Business CIB unit is responsible for managing and driving business with institutional clients through Corporate and Investment Banking products (Global Markets, Global Transactional Banking, and Investment Banking and Finance).
- To perform these functions, Global Institutional Business CIB is organized into five main activity sectors: Banks, Wealth and Asset Managers, Insurance, Public Sector, and Financial Sponsors.
- The area has just redefined its strategic approach, called ASP3N, which aims, among other objectives, to evolve the income mix between corporate and institutional clients from current levels (approximately 2/3 – 1/3) to near parity by 2029 through a comprehensive front to back business transformation.
- BBVA’s new institutional business will be structured around two main pillars: a) product Development (understood comprehensively, including not only trading but also IT, operations, risks, etc.) and b) a new commercial coverage model, which seeks to increase specialization, enhance the level of client interaction, and improve commercial processes.
Description:
- A Financial Sponsors Vice President is a member of an Originations, client-facing team within BBVA’s Corporate and Investment Bank (CIB). The Vice President’s primary responsibility is to support the Financial Sponsors Clients USA Relationship Managers in developing, marketing, and delivering the bank’s wide range of banking products and services to Financial Sponsors clients (international infrastructure and energy funds, sovereign wealth funds, and pension funds) and portfolio companies as part of the US Institutional Plan (ASP3N).
- The Vice President will coordinate closely with Relationship Managers in the United States, Europe and Latin America, and across Product groups to manage all aspects of transactions, including proposal preparation and liaising with risk and Portfolio Management, Legal, Operations, and Finance teams.
- Responsible for driving the development of commercial relationships, origination, successful execution, and closing of new business opportunities – mainly investment banking, global markets and tailor-made structured and leveraged lending solutions (project finance, corporate lending, fund financing, global transactional banking) and developing deep client segment expertise and strategic dialogue, in coordination with the Global Bankers covering the global relationship.
- This role is a unique opportunity with significant responsibility and an ability to positively impact a global growth platform, which offers the candidate high exposure to clients, products, mentorship, and BBVA senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Global Financial Sponsors Manager and Global Bankers in executing the strategy, business plan and budget for the unit. Focus on origination of new business opportunities in the US, Europe, and Latam and foster cross-selling with the financial sponsors clients.
- Manage a specific portfolio of clients in the US, being directly responsible for developing and maintaining a close relationship with clients (Financial Sponsors and portfolio companies) at top management levels, in coordination with the Global Banker covering all the geographies.
- Originate new business opportunities jointly with the CIB product partners. Focus on understanding clients’ investment needs and strategic decisions, with a special focus on cross border deals (mainly Iberia and Latam) leveraging BBVA’s global footprint.
- Offer a comprehensive market and financial advisory service to the clients, delivering tailored made investment banking ideas and recommendations. Work closely with the M&A team to identify Cross Border M&A opportunities within the client portfolio.
- Participate in the negotiation of terms and conditions of deals. Collaborate with the CIB product units, credit risk, operations, legal, regulatory, compliance, and client onboarding in checking and reviewing legal documentation and contracts.
- Oversee deal execution, assisting the CIB product units in the communication with the clients and other BBVA internal units to solve problems or bottlenecks.
- Provide specialized advisory to the Risk unit about Financial Sponsors’ specific operations and/ or corporate events. Build and maintain a fluent communication with the Risk units, in order to promote the knowledge and understanding of this clients’ segment.
- Lead the credit approval process for clients and work with the Risk department to establish annual risk policy and limits according to the clients’ needs and the bank’s appetite.
- Follow and comply with all the Compliance internal processes and requirements.
- Focus on profitability and revenue growth through investment banking operations and cross-selling with the clients’ portfolio under his/her responsibility. Drive new product development.
- Participate in the strategic and pipeline committees of the business unit.
- Oversee the elaboration of the different presentations and documentation (client and prospect due diligence, client pitching, internal credit committee presentations, etc.).
- Attend and participate proactively in Financial Sponsor and Infrastructure specific conferences and events to boost BBVA’s visibility in the market and expand our network with clients and peers.
Marketing and Deal Execution
- Identify and understand client needs, promptly responding to all client requests.
- Coordinate transaction closings, including management of all documentation and follow-up.
- Prepare for client meetings, including presentation materials, background information and call plans.
- Research and evaluate potential new client relationships.
- Participate in Credit Committees jointly with Relationship Managers
Internal Coordination and Problem Solving:
- Conduct joint planning sessions with Product teams including M&A Advisory, Debt Capital Markets, Bank Syndications, Corporate Lending, Foreign Exchange, Cash management, etc.
- Coordinate internal procedures with the Credit, Operational and Legal departments.
- Resolve any financial, administrative and operational issues by working closely with Operations, Middle Office and Business Development.
- Maintain the Customer Relationship Management system for pipeline and profitability reporting.
Additional expectations within the scope of the Vice President role:
- Strong communication skills; Ability to interact and communicate effectively with internal and external clients across different departments and regions (Clients, Product Specialists, Credit team, FIG, Financial Sponsors, and local relationship managers)
- Strong knowledge of finance and accounting.
- Ability to meet deadlines and prepare client presentations on time and with minimum errors (high attention to detail).
- Successful interaction with the various product groups and colleagues.
- Ability to work under pressure and multi-task
- Develop solid knowledge of banking products and services.
- Strong work ethic and high degree of proactiveness.
- Experience and ability in managing and mentoring junior resources (Analysts/Associates)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years minimum of work experience; MBA preferred
- Minimum four (4) years experience in Investment Banking or Consulting, preferably with exposure to Financial Sponsor transactions and relationships
- Fluency in English (and Spanish and plus)
- Strong analytical and financial modeling skills
- Advanced computer skills, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint; Reuters and Bloomberg a plus
- Understanding of international economics and markets
- Credit Training a plus
- FINRA exams (SIE, Series 7, Series 79, Series 63,) to be completed upon employment (unless transferred)
- Pursuit of the CFA designation a plus
Knowledge & Skills:
- Experience in Financial Sponsor client coverage and relevant interaction with internal departments involved in the functions described above: risk, project finance, corporate lending, fund financing, global transactional banking, global markets, legal, etc.
- Ability to develop strategic dialogue with clients
- Knowledge of the Energy (renewables, oil and gas, power, environment) and Infrastructure (Transportation, Digital, Social, Real Estate) sectors, as well as related investment banking products
- Solid Financial Sponsors market knowledge, industry trends, and existing client relationships
- Ability to lead deal and project processes via strong coordination with colleagues from different teams and geographies involving all the above areas on a deal by deal (and project) basis
