Requirements

  • Associates degree in Veterinary Technology
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • New York State licensure or eligibility to become licensed in NYS.

Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians with preparing and maintaining patient and service flow, including patient scheduling, receiving and counseling clients.
  • Assist veterinarians with organizing and assisting with all technical aspects of patient care and procedures, including treatments, examinations, sample collection, imaging, and medical and surgical preparation and procedures (i.e., medical anesthesia, intensive care, emergency). This includes performing nursing care as needed.
  • Organize, clean, and sterilize instruments or tools used during clinical or teaching activities and the ward. Ensure that the Exotic Pet Service is working at full functionality by ordering, stocking/restocking supplies and equipment.
  • Perform point-of-care laboratory techniques such as fecal analysis, hematology, and chemistry, along with preparing and processing laboratory requests, outside laboratories, and other diagnostic requests.
  • Tech Veterinary students and house officers on topics previously discussed with the Exotic Pet Service faculty and assist with research done by the Exotic Pet Service as needed.
  • Provide floating backup coverage to other services in the CUHA as determined and assigned by the supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical skills including, but not limited to, obtaining blood, tissue or urine samples for diagnostic procedures and/or storage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, deductive reasoning and pattern recognition skills along with relational skills to aid effective communication with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians, and customers in a professional manner at all times. Comfortable in guiding veterinary students in practical experience.
  • Willingness to meet the physical requirements of the position, which include, but are not limited to, stressful circumstances, prolonged standing, and kneeling, and lifting heavy patients. Must be able to lift and restrain animals that may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Strong interest in working collaboratively as a team member as well as proactively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment handling multiple tasks with contending timelines while paying close attention to details.
