Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Support the Executive Editor in the ongoing development and execution of The Washington Post’s content and platform strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Editor to define excellence in terms of coverage priorities, storytelling style, content structure, platform programming and related KPIs.
  • Oversee a team of senior editors who oversee the 24/7 global news agenda of The Post, working with teams across the newsroom.
  • Advise and guide department heads and their teams on running big news stories, and on story package requirements to ensure an optimal digital experience, particularly exploring non-text storytelling alternatives.
  • Ensure all content is optimized for The Washington Post’s platforms and third-party platforms, considering topics, user needs, headlines, visuals and story length.
  • Provide constructive feedback to department heads, news editors, live editors and platform editors to foster continuous improvement in journalism and user experience.
  • Collaborate with the Audience & Analytics team and the Product team to monitor and maximize content performance on digital platforms. Coordinate with platform editors and department heads on short-term adjustments and long-term strategy refinements, offering feedback as needed.
  • Oversee the platform editors as they curate content for The Washington Post’s digital platforms and off-platform offerings following established priorities and programming schedules, audience engagement and performance metrics.
  • Work with and advise planning editors and department heads on coverage and presentation for major news events.
  • Work with AI specialists, both internal and external, to implement innovative and ethical GenAI and AI strategies that innovate and enhance The Washington Post’s journalism and audience experience.
  • Develop and regularly refine an audience engagement and retention strategy for each platform and audience segment in collaboration with the Executive Editor and the Audience team, ensuring seamless implementation with platform editors.
  • Define, track and drive growth in audience engagement and retention KPIs for each platform in partnership with the Audience team, monitoring progress and initiating adjustments as needed.
  • Create, test and implement new ways of on and on-platform engagement together with Audience and Product.
  • Evaluate and refine platform strategies — including content, design, UX, navigation, and personalization — in collaboration with the Executive Editor, Product, Engineering and senior editors. These evaluations should be based on industry trends, AI advancements, audience behavior and editorial vision and mission.
  • Collaborate closely with the Executive Editor and Product on initiatives involving product development, platform enhancements and content strategy improvements.
  • Optimize the newsroom workflows with department heads, live editors, news editors and platform editors. Focus on content efficiency (e.g., prioritization, suitable lengths), integration of multimedia formats (interactive graphics, video, etc.), and alignment with platform programming timings.
  • Review and enhance back-end functionality and usability of creation, production and news management tools. Partner with development and tech teams to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Inspire Post journalists to produce their best work on all platforms.
