Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of specialized ophthalmic experience (for COT/COA)
- Completion of a two-year Certified Ophthalmic Technician or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant program or equivalent (for COT/COA)
- JCAHPO certification as a COT or COA required
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required
- Successful completion of MUHA departmental competencies or an accredited Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant program (for NCOA)
- Certification of COA, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant required within 6-12 months of hire date (for NCOA)
Responsibilities
- Performs advanced medical history
- Checks patient’s visual acuity
- Dilates patient’s eyes
- Performs basic slit-lamp exam, visual fields, color vision tests, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry, and refractometry
- Assists with office surgical procedures
- Maintains complete and accurate information in the patient’s medical record
- Prepares and maintains exam rooms to ensure they are adequately stocked with supplies and that all equipment and instruments are in proper working order
- Prepares instruments for sterilization
- Screens patient phone calls and questions
- Follows Guest Relation Policy: Be polite, attentive and courteous to all patients at all times
- Performs other related duties incidental to the work
