Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of specialized ophthalmic experience (for COT/COA)
  • Completion of a two-year Certified Ophthalmic Technician or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant program or equivalent (for COT/COA)
  • JCAHPO certification as a COT or COA required
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required
  • Successful completion of MUHA departmental competencies or an accredited Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant program (for NCOA)
  • Certification of COA, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant required within 6-12 months of hire date (for NCOA)

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced medical history
  • Checks patient’s visual acuity
  • Dilates patient’s eyes
  • Performs basic slit-lamp exam, visual fields, color vision tests, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry, and refractometry
  • Assists with office surgical procedures
  • Maintains complete and accurate information in the patient’s medical record
  • Prepares and maintains exam rooms to ensure they are adequately stocked with supplies and that all equipment and instruments are in proper working order
  • Prepares instruments for sterilization
  • Screens patient phone calls and questions
  • Follows Guest Relation Policy: Be polite, attentive and courteous to all patients at all times
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work
