Western Digital, the premiere producer of hard disk drives (HDD), is seeking an equipment engineer to maintain and perform analyses on our fleet of Rigaku and Panalytical X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and X-Ray Reflectivity (XRR) instruments. The production of hard drives includes the development of novel thin films on head wafers and magnetic media. The primary purpose of our work is to characterize these stacks of thin films in support of next generation HDD technology. Such characterization requires a broad set of materials science analytical capabilities, and a laboratory on this scale requires the maintenance of many pieces of equipment and analytical instrumentation. These needs include maintenance and troubleshooting of vacuum systems, high voltage electron and/or X-ray sources, water cooling systems, process gases, and electronic control systems, including circuit boards and microelectronic components. The candidate will work side-by-side with and learn from a team of x-ray scientists and analysts.
