Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary school.
  • North American Veterinary Licensing (NAVLE) required.
  • Licensed to practice in British Columbia, Canada.
  • 2+ years of practical experience working with food animals, with a preference for poultry.
  • Familiarity with provincial and federal regulations related to poultry health, biosecurity, and food safety.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and treating poultry diseases, including the use of advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with farm managers, workers, and other stakeholders.
  • Commitment to ongoing education to stay current with the latest advancements in poultry health and management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address health issues and improve flock management practices.
  • Strategic thinker with a proactive approach to identifying challenges and driving solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel.
  • Ability to handle the physical demands of the job, including working in various farm environments and handling poultry.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine health assessments, regularly checking the health of poultry flocks to ensure they are free from diseases and other health issues.
  • Diagnose and design a health or management plan to support productivity.
  • Develop and implement disease prevention programs to prevent diseases within poultry populations.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on proper nutrition and feeding practices to ensure the health and productivity of poultry.
  • Monitor biosecurity measures, overseeing all biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Perform necropsies to determine the causes of death in poultry.
  • Provide housing and environmental guidance, advising on proper environmental management to promote the well-being of poultry.
  • Provide advice on vaccines and necessary medications to ensure optimal flock health.
  • Communicate with farm managers, developing trusting relationships to help implement best practices for animal care.
  • Be proficient in Hatchery operations to provide technical support to Hatchery personnel.
  • Organize and oversee Hatchery and Farm third party certifications such as Animal Welfare.
  • Maintain detailed records of health assessments, treatments, and other relevant information.
  • Liaise with Head Office to keep them apprised of any notable developments related to flock health or industry updates.
  • Participate in veterinary and poultry industry conferences, workshops, and seminars to learn about the latest research, technologies, and best practices.
  • Monitor regulatory changes, staying current with changes in regulations and guidelines related to poultry health, poultry welfare, biosecurity, and food safety.
  • Implement and stay current with the latest diagnostic tools, treatment methods, and management software to improve poultry health outcomes.
