Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required, masters preferred.
  • Experience with standard methods for DNA, RNA, and protein isolation and analysis
  • Experience with sterile cell culture
  • Experience with laboratory rodent handling and rodent colony management
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research projects with some independence
  • Good communication skills
  • Good record-keeping skills
  • Experience working with respiratory viruses
  • Experience with flow cytometry
  • Computer skills with knowledge of spreadsheet and graphics applications

Responsibilities

  • Perform and support research in a lab investigating the impact of lung injury and various treatments on alveolar epithelial cell metabolism and energetics in vitro and in vivo (in small rodents)
  • Participate in the design and execution of laboratory projects using small rodents, including drug treatments, studies of lung function and rodent respiratory epithelial cell metabolism ex vivo and in sterile in vitro culture models
  • Perform ELISA and related assays on rodent and human plasma samples
  • Work under the supervision of the PI to develop and implement new to lab assays based on published protocols as necessary
  • Extract, analyze, and present experimental data generated during participation in each project
  • Assist the PI in planning and designing new experiments
  • Assist with writing and editing research funding proposals, progress reports for funding agencies, technical reports, journal articles, and individual scientific presentations
  • Oversee general laboratory management
  • Assist with rodent colony maintenance (including breeding and genotyping)
  • Manage the operations of the lab, including training of students, maintaining research accounts, lab safety protocols and compliance, ordering supplies, generating stock solutions and materials, and keeping the laboratory in safe working order
