Requirements
- 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager
- Experience setting and executing technical strategies
- Experience managing production operations for high-availability systems
- Prior experience collaborating with cross-functional leaders across Product, Design, and Data
- Demonstrated history of developing a high-performance team and growing its skills over time
- Fluency in JavaScript applications, cloud deployments, observability, monitoring, and alerting
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical capability of our Story experience, ensuring that it is reliable, efficient, and secure and working well for the newsroom, readers, and business
- Partner with engineers and Product, Design, and Data counterparts to identify, scope, and prioritize impactful investments
- Coach engineers in developing architectures that support this technical strategy
- Work with our Newsroom Support team to ensure reliable 24×7 global operations
- Partner with engineers to set technical strategies to achieve this roadmap
- Supervise 6-8 reports, ensuring that contributors are effective in their technical work and in their collaborations
- Coach the team on product engineering, deepening their product and strategy awareness and encouraging systemic engineering thinking
- Own technical and culture initiatives at the group level, in coordination with other Engineering Managers and the Director
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

- Direct experience with digital journalism, CMS systems, and/or ProseMirror
