Requirements
- PhD degree in a related field (e.g., Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry) from a top-tier American university, along with a strong academic record and demonstrated excellence in research.
- Demonstrated track record with at least 10 years of experience in designing and innovating in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Ability and desire to perform hands-on work, including running laboratory experiments and test plans, assembling complex systems, performing analytical measurements, and fabricating small prototypes and parts.
- Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
- High degree of self-direction and self-reliance, and the ability to formulate and test concepts independently.
- Maintaining detailed experimental records and documents, analyzing data using tools such as Microsoft Excel or Matlab, and presenting results at internal technical meetings.
- Willingness to work on both engineering design and assay chemistries, and a desire to fill gaps in knowledge and skills when necessary.
Responsibilities
- Advance the design of microfluidic cartridges and instruments through experiments and modeling, while utilizing fundamental principles of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mechanical engineering.
- Design, set up, and execute experiments to assess and improve assay chemistries for diagnostic tests, using fundamental principles of physical chemistry and biochemistry.
- Interact with a larger multidisciplinary team comprising both engineers and scientists as well as marketing and executive teams.
- Design and build test rigs for evaluating engineering design and assay chemistry.
- Provide technical knowledge and data-driven direction to scientific colleagues.
- Work in a Biosafety Level 2 environment and handle a variety of sample matrices and microorganisms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to design and implement control systems and testbeds, drawing upon knowledge in firmware, software, and mechanical design.
- Background in using Multiphysics modeling software such as COMSOL or ANSYS.
- Experience with the design and manufacturing of small parts using both CAD software packages (ie Creo or Solidworks) and machine shop tools such as mills, lathes, and laser cutters.
- Knowledge of optics, and of fluorescence and colorimetric detection techniques for biochemical assays.
- Knowledge of physical chemistry from the standpoint of designing and optimizing buffer formulations for biochemical assays.
- Designing oligonucleotide assays and implementing methods for multiplex diagnostic techniques.
