Staff Accountant

About the role: 
DUAL North America, Inc. is seeking a Staff Accountant responsible for overseeing and managing the company’s compliance with surplus lines tax regulations as well as supporting accounting functions. This role involves managing the calculation, reporting, and remittance of surplus lines taxes in multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with state and federal regulations.  In addition, the Staff Accountant will prepare journal entries, account reconciliations and other accounting tasks as needed.  The Staff Accountant will also work closely with internal teams, including legal, risk and operations, to streamline processes, identify risks, and implement best practices. The ideal candidate will possess  knowledge of accounting principles, knowledge of surplus lines tax reporting and payment processes, strong analytical skills, and experience within the property and casualty insurance industry.

Essential Functions:
Surplus Lines Tax Compliance:
•    Preparation and filing of surplus lines tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions.
•    Ensure compliance with state-specific regulations, including tax rates, due dates, and reporting requirements.
•    Reconcile surplus lines tax liabilities and payments to ensure accurate reporting.

Compliance and Risk Management:
•    Coordinate and file surplus lines tax payments to regulatory agencies in a timely and accurate manner.
•    Ensure that all applicable premiums are accounted for, including tax on any exempt or non-admitted policies.
•    Ensure proper documentation and support for audit and regulatory review purposes. 
•    Collaborate with underwriting, risk, legal, and compliance departments to address any tax issues related to policy placements.
•    Work with external auditors and tax consultants as necessary to address any compliance or reporting issues.
Audit and Documentation:
•    Prepare for any surplus lines tax audits, ensuring all necessary documentation is available and accurate.
•    Respond to inquiries from tax authorities and assist with resolving any disputes or discrepancies.
Support of Accounting Functions:
•    Recording journal entries for transactions such as expenses, revenues, and adjustments.
•    Reconcile balance sheet accounts, such as cash, accounts payable, accounts receivable to ensure they match the actual figures.
•    Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Job Requirements (education, experience, skills): 
•    Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA, MBA or Master’s degree in a related field is a plus.
•    Minimum of 2 years of progressive accounting experience. 
•    Experience in the insurance industry is strongly preferred.
•    Familiarity with agency management systems or commission systems used in the insurance or financial services industry a plus.
•    Knowledge of GAAP and regulatory accounting practices.
•    Experience in accounting software and ERP systems; strong proficiency in MS Office Suite (particularly in Excel).
•    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
•    Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
