Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Medical Technology or related field and either advanced degree or certification (i.e. ASCP SBB or MB or equivalent) is required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a CLIA certified or other GLP laboratory plus 2 years of general laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems, often involving groups of people.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, delegate and follow-up.
  • Knowledge of scientific and blood bank principles pertaining to immunohematologic testing preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and motivate others.
  • Knowledge of test methods, project management systems and tools.
  • Ability to work on a team.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Molecular Laboratory staff performing testing of patient and blood donor samples submitted for DNA testing to predict red cell, platelet and white cell antigens.
  • Manage staff scheduling to optimize productivity.
  • Establish and monitor productivity, operation, and quality metrics to assure daily testing and turnaround goals are being met and quality test results are being produced through standardized processes.
  • Monitor discrepancy occurrence and resolution to assure appropriate decisions, product disposition and documentation of problems.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate performance management to ensure a well-qualified team and to enhance operational success.
  • Assure supplies, sample testing and staff resources are managed in fiscally sound manner.
  • Assure records are reviewed, managed and archived according to regulatory requirements and local procedures.
  • Coordinate testing and reporting of periodic laboratory proficiency testing.
  • Implement process, product and equipment changes and upgrades according to established change control plan.
  • Execute prescribed validation plans for processes and equipment if indicated.
  • Actively communicate and collaborate with managers and supervisors of other departments and regions regarding testing schedules and coordination of receipt of test results.
  • Perform technical reviews of test results and reagent and instrument qualifications and instrument calibrations.
  • Communicate with hospital blood bank personnel to report patient findings.
  • Prepare and present case studies and educational reviews related to blood cell antigen genotyping to laboratory staff, departmental staff, and broader audiences, as requested.
  • Draft abstracts and manuscripts relevant to work performed in the laboratory; prepare and present posters and oral abstracts at scientific conferences.
  • Assist the Laboratory Director in evaluation of new technology for potential integration and use in the laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASCP certification (BB, SBB or MB) or equivalent certification preferred.
