Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years in US tax experience in an accounting firm and/or industry.
  • US Certified Public Accountant or Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant with at least 1 year of post-designation experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of US corporate tax rules.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP is a requirement.
  • Familiarity with Canadian, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Sweden corporate tax rules is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (‘ASPE’) is an asset.
  • Proven track record in team management, including coaching and providing feedback to work prepared by junior members of staff.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and time-manage.
  • Impeccable accuracy with numbers and high attention to detail.
  • Expert level Excel proficiency, with advanced knowledge of Word and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation and primary review of Global Relay’s portfolio of interim and year-end corporate tax provisions for the United States for over 13 (and growing) jurisdictions.
  • Responsible for providing corporate tax return information to external consultants and performing comprehensive review of deliverables thereof.
  • Monitor corporate tax thresholds and perform detailed research of when corporate tax nexus has been breached and working through project plan to obtain various registrations when required, working alongside internal teams and external tax advisors and counsel.
  • Collaborate with the Tax Manager regarding both the documentation and implementation of transfer pricing strategies and policies for foreign subsidiary entities, particularly the United States, including performing modelling and engaging with external consultants when necessary.
  • Own the financial reporting impact of corporate taxes including the recognition of corporate tax expense and disclosure within Global Relay’s financial statements and book-to-tax analyses.
  • Manage taxation-related audit queries and information requests.
  • Stay current with relevant US and international law, trends, and developments and advise senior management on implications of changes.
  • Identify and assist with tax planning strategies in conjunction with the VP Finance, Chief Financial Officer, and external consultants.
  • Perform ad hoc tax analysis on tax implications of transactions as needed.
  • Own compliance of sales and use tax and other taxes, such as gross receipts and franchise, for a growing portfolio of jurisdictions within the United States, including performing review of work performed by junior staff to support such filings.
  • Monitor sales tax nexus thresholds and perform detailed research of when sales tax nexus has been breached.
  • Collaborate with the Tax Manager to ensure the accuracy of sales taxability conclusions for Global Relay’s nuanced product offering by performing thorough research and exercising strong problem-solving skills when assessing state and local sales tax legislation against Global Relay’s facts and circumstances, specifically with a focus on US state and local taxation rules.
  • Champion the next phase of our implementation of a sales tax engine, including designing and optimizing processes to drive efficiency and accuracy of sales tax collection, reporting and remittance.
  • Manage all tax related inquiries (internal and external) and maintain all tax documentation related to the taxability of services such as tax residency, exemption certificates, and other artefacts.
  • Due to the centralization of our Finance function in Vancouver, BC, and our highly integrated operations, the US Tax Manager may be asked to help with cross review and be involved with work and projects in taxation related to other jurisdictions (e.g. Canada, Europe) as the business requires.
  • Participate in ad hoc tax, accounting and finance projects, analyses and initiatives when required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in both indirect and/or international corporate tax is not mandatory for this role but would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with NetSuite ERP, Salesforce CRM, or Avalara’s AvaTax sales tax engine is an asset.
