Requirements
- Basic understanding of animal anatomy, anesthesia, euthanasia, veterinary supportive care, biohazard containment, chemical hazard containment, and risk-reduction measures.
- Knowledge of investigators’ needs with respect to the scientific process and the content of corresponding IACUC approved protocols.
- Knowledge of animal welfare regulations and assurance of animal health and well-being.
- An associate degree in animal husbandry, agriculture, or a related field and three years of work experience directly related to the area of employment.
Responsibilities
- Perform clinical rounds, follow-up treatments, post-surgical, emergency and critical care for a wide variety of laboratory animal species involved in research protocols.
- Examine sick animals and communicate health issues to research staff.
- Administer oral medications, injections, perform blood collection, assess animal health, and perform thorough physical exams.
- Calculate drug doses and administer supplemental fluids to various lab animal species.
- Maintain accurate medical records.
- Provide technical services for research personnel, including giving injections and blood collection.
- Provide backup to the Surgical Research Laboratory and assist in surgical procedures.
- Utilize departmental databases for maintaining clinical data and billing purposes.
- Provide training for research personnel in various rodent techniques and animal care.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Veterinary Technician Certification may be used in lieu of the years of experience.
